MUSIC IN THE MONTH OF MAY

Live music is the best, right blog?

Now that I think of it, I've seen one or two live shoes since I've been here, but certainly not any recently, or any shows that weren't foreigner bands. So last night I got my live music fix! First I went for a walk about 7:30 because the weather is starting to get San Diego perfect and so it was a nice day for a stroll, and when I ventured by the public amphitheater in the park a few blocks away there was a free show of people singing some poppy stuff so I took that in for a while and it was great.

Then myself and two friends went to a thing called a 'Round Robin' show, and it was awesome. The idea behind a Round Robin show is that there are five or six stages and each stage has one band, and each band plays one song and then they rotate in a circle around the stage. Great idea right!? But also because there are no bad seats in the house because if you are in the back for one song, you will be in the front a few songs later.

We went to the district called Hongdae, which is a good mix of westerners and locals, but also a big club district so people are dressed up in some strange get-ups and it looks like there are some great restaurants and shops around. But we took a new route to get there and we got lost, which was a great thing because we walked around a whole new side of the area that I hadn't seen before. Eventually we found where we were going and we were right on time!

Above was taken while we were waiting in line (there's the show's poster in the background) and my co-worker Tyler talking to some people, trying to figure out how to work the lockers they have outside the entrance to stash our stuff.

Below is the club it's self. The crowd wasn't too big, and though it was mostly foreigners the bands were all Korean.

Above are the pics I snagged during the show. There were 5 bands, and they were all different types of music and they were all GREAT. The cover charge to get in was $20 which is sort of steep, but that's only $4 a band so it worked out. The first one was strange, electric music, the second band was very Weezer-ish-surfer-punk, and the next band was straight rock n roll. There was also a rap group that was really good, and a duo on guitar and drums that played great Arcade-Fire-like indie music. Every song was fantastic and the bands played for about two hours, I couldn't have asked for a better show.

We left when it ended and walked around for a while, and then we hopped in the first cab we could find -- and it was a music themed cab. It is still hard to believe that it was real:

There were CDS and Records glued to the ceiling and doors and stuff. The driver had put in two screens in the cab, and playing on them were videos. He had taken a video camera and video taped his massive stereo/TV system at home while it played an old live Johnny Cash record and that was what was playing, and when the tape wasn't showing the video of Mr. Cash, it was like zooming in on all his various audio equipment like he was showing it off or something. Hahah there's no tipping in Korea so I'm not sure why he does all this, but it was a great musical end to a musical day.
